Ex-Sunderland footballer Adam Johnson has been stripped of his England caps, his defence team has informed the court.

The 28-year-old has been sentenced to six years in jail following sexual activity with a child and grooming, at Bradford Crown Court today.

Speaking to the court, Johnson’s QC Orlando Pownall revealed that the 28-year-old had been stripped of his international caps.

“[He has]lost a lucrative career", said Pownall. "He has been stripped of his England caps. He has become the subject of national humiliation".

Johnson made his England debut as a 22-year-old back in 2010, coming on as a substitute during their 3-1 win over Mexico.

He would go on to win 12 caps for his country, scoring twice. He final appearance was against the Netherlands, at Wembley, in 2012.
