AC Milan to end interest in Chelsea boss Antonio Conte and hand Gennaro Gattuso new deal

AC Milan are considering ending their interest in Chelsea coach Antonio Conte and handing Gennaro Gattuso a contract extension instead.

Conte has been on the Serie A club's wish-list since last summer and was expected to be offered the post when he leaves Chelsea, which is likely to be at the end of the campaign at the latest.

AC Milan appointed Gattuso on an interim basis in November after they sacked Vincenzo Montella.

His deal was only until the end of the season, which further increased talk that AC Milan had Conte in mind to take over on a permanent basis.

However, Gattuso has impressed in the role and has now led the club on an unbeaten run lasting eight games.

AC Milan are now thinking about rewarding the former Italy midfielder with a two-year contract.

Conte's position as Chelsea coach has been in question since he won the title last May and grew frustrated with the board over their transfer dealings.

But the Italian has increasingly come under pressure following the turn of the year as they have gone on a run of just two wins in 10 games.

His situation is also being monitored by Paris Saint Germain, Inter Milan and Real Madrid should they decide to make a change in the dug-out during the close season.
