Gabriella Papadakis won ice dance silver with Guillaume Cizeron, 24 hours after suffering her “worst nightmare” when her dress came undone during their first routine.

Following Monday's wardrobe malfunction in the short dance, Papadakis played safe with her outfit which had no hooks.

The French pair starred today, setting a world record for free dance with 123.35 points.

However, their overall score of 205.28 across the two days was beaten by Canada’s Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, who won with a world record of 206.07.

Virtue, 28, and Moir, 30, have skated together since they were seven and nine respectively and were hailed today as the Torvill and Dean of their generation.

The Canadians took gold in 2010 and silver four years later and this was expected to be their last competitive performance together.

“They’ve been an inspiration and have moved the sport on,” said Britain’s Nick Buckland. “Torvill and Dean were absolute icons but Tess and Scott are icons in their own way. We’ll take the sport where it is now and move it forward but Tessa and Scott are something else.”

Buckland and Penny Coomes finished 11th with the latter likening her return to the Olympics to a medal, having broken her knee in eight places 18 months ago.

“I’m just so happy to be back and we gave it everything,” she said. “This is the stuff that makes it all worthwhile.”
