FIFA back down in row over transfers

Football's world governing body today backed down in the dispute with their European counterparts, UEFA, and withdrew controversial proposals for changes to the transfer system.

The European Commission want a complete overhaul of the transfer system so it falls in line with other working practices.

FIFA ignored earlier agreements with UEFA and suggested to the EC that players could walk out on contracts at just three months' notice.

But unity was restored after FIFA president Sepp Blatter said the proposals were no longer valid.

He met UEFA president Lennart Johansson today and said: "We will have to make sure we work hand-in-hand in the future."
