Everton boss Moyes considers move for Newcastle forward Smith

manager David Moyes is hoping to sign ’s Alan Smith in a £3million deal after Andrew Johnson moved closer to a £13m Goodison Park exit.


Moyes is keen to make  the 27-year-old former  Leeds and Manchester United player his first capture of a frustrating summer, while Johnson  was last night putting  the finishing touches to his protracted move to Fulham for a fee that will  eventually rise to £13m.

While the Toffees manager's need for a proven goalscorer up front means Smith is not his first choice it is an increasingly popular option.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa have agreed a £3.5m fee with Reading for England left-back Nicky Shorey.
