England on top at Headingley

Ryan Sidebottom revelled in his return to Test cricket after Kevin Pietersen's mammoth contribution put England firmly in control against West Indies at Headingley.

Nottinghamshire seamer Sidebottom, recalled after a six-year absence, struck twice early on after Pietersen's 226 allowed the home side to declare on 570 for seven.

The West Indies went in at the tea break on 66 for two - but that soon became 82 for five after Steve Harmison and Liam Plunkett both struck.

Sidebottom, 29, claimed the prize scalp of Chris Gayle as his first Test victim - he failed to take a wicket on his debut against Pakistan in 2001 - when he was rewarded for keeping a full length.

South African umpire Rudi Koertzen then upheld a second lbw appeal when Daren Ganga failed to play a shot at one which straightened.

Early in the last session, a full-length Harmison delivery found the outside edge of Sylvester Joseph's bat and Andrew Strauss held the chance at slip.

Devon Smith was the next man to go, edging Plunkett into the safe hands of Alastair Cook, before Harmison dismissed Runako Morton
