Darren hell-bent on starting role

14 April 2012

Darren Bent has vowed to shake off his 'super-sub' tag and show Peter Taylor he can be England Under-21s' first-choice striker in today's European Championship qualifier in Baku.

The Ipswich star has scored all seven of his goals at that level when coming off the bench and he has netted in all three of this season's qualifying wins against Austria, Poland and Wales.

Now Taylor is set to give Bent a chance alongside Jonathan Stead in the starting line-up after Carlton Cole aggravated his ankle injury against the Welsh at Ewood Park on Friday.

Bent said: "You don't want to be known as a super-sub. You want to be known as someone who can play from the start.

"I'll keep working hard and hopefully that start is not too far away. I got closer to that against Wales because Carlton got injured so early."
