MCC Women’s Cricket Day takes place at Lord’s on Wednesday, with Middlesex meeting Surrey in the first competitive women’s county fixture to take place at the Home of Cricket.

Middlesex met a Marylebone Cricket Club side captained by Charlotte Edwards in their first ever appearance on the ground last year, but this time it will be a competitive T20 fixture against their rivals Surrey.

The two sides first played for the London Cup at the Oval in 2015 and this year the fixture has moved to Lord’s for the first time.

The day is part of MCC Cricket week and sits alongside traditional fixtures such as Eton vs Harrow and Oxford vs Cambridge.

“It’s really exciting,” said Middlesex’s England star Sophia Dunkley, who has scored two centuries and has the lowest score of 52 in her last four innings.

“It’s nice that the women’s game is being recognised, especially at the domestic level. There’s always a bit of rivalry, the game has been running for a few years and everyone sees it as a great game to be a part of. Having it at Lord’s makes it extra special.”

Surrey’s Bryony Smith agreed: “It will be a special day for everyone. I have never played at Lord’s, even on the Nursery Ground so it will be an amazing experience to play at such an historic place. It’s a big step for the women’s game.”
