Andrew Strauss today insisted England could prosper without Kevin Pietersen as the captain made his 100th Test appearance.

Pietersen was dropped from the squad for the Third Investec Test against South Africa, which England must win to stay at the top of the ICC rankings, following the storm caused by “provocative” texts he sent to England’s opponents during the drawn Second Test at Headingley.

Jonny Bairstow replaced Pietersen and Graeme Swann returned in favour of Tim Bresnan. England bowled first after winning the toss and removed skipper Graeme Smith for 14, caught behind off Jimmy Anderson. The build-up to the match has been, however, dominated by Pietersen.

“The team is not reliant on one individual,” said Strauss. “We are capable of winning this Test.

“It has been a difficult week but everyone has been keen to focus on the game. I have been pleased and proud about the way the players have responded.

“It is my 100th Test and I am determined to savour it. It’s an honour and a privilege. It’d be even more special if we could win.”

Anderson and Stuart Broad bowled well in the first hour and were rewarded when Smith was out to leave the visitors 22-1.

Jamaican sprinter and Olympic medallist Yohan Blake had the honour of ringing the bell to signify play was about to start.
