England were beaten in a home ODI series for the first time in five years as Australia won a thrilling decider at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

After an experimental summer in the white-ball formats, Eoin Morgan’s side were back close to full strength for the three-game run against the old enemy, with the bulk of last summer’s World Cup winning side reunited.

It wasn’t enough, however, as Aaron Finch’s visitors won the series 2-1 to cap a unique men’s international summer.

Here’s how England’s players rated…

Jason Roy - 3

3 matches: 24 runs at 8

A struggle. Run out when looking good by Root in game two, then slapped straight to point first ball in the last match. Is a mighty player, but a slightly more nuanced approach might be required on these trickier pitches.

Jonny Bairstow - 8

3 matches: 196 runs at 65

Fine innings held England together in the first and last games. His 10th ODI hundred was a terrific innings and proved once again how good he is when England are up against it.

Joe Root - 5

3 matches: 40 runs at 13, wickets

Knock in the second game was useful, and got a decent ball in the third. But looked short on energy and scoring options. But gets an extra point for two key wickets in the final match.

Eoin Morgan - 7

3 matches: 88 runs at 29

His captaincy stood out more than his batting in this series (although in a quieter moment he might regret giving Rashid the deciding over), but made a couple of handy contributions in second and third games.

Jos Buttler - 3

3 matches: 12 runs at 4

Not helped by top order troubles getting him to the crease a little early but Buttler looked knackered at the end of what has been an arduous summer. Kept well until dropping Maxwell in the decider.

Sam Billings - 8

3 matches: 183 runs at 61

A maiden hundred in the opener, then a handy knock in the final game. Averaged 79 in ODIs this summer, reasserting his position as England’s first reserve – at least.

Moeen Ali - 3

1 match: 6 runs, 0 wicket

Went wicketless and scored just six in the opener. Absence of Stokes makes Moeen easier to select and he has no direct rivals for his position, but needs to lift his game to go back to being indispensable.

Chris Woakes - 8

3 matches: 89 runs at 45; 6 wickets

Quite possibly England’s man of the series. Runs in the second and third games, and important wickets with the new ball. Just a great all-round cricketer.

Sam Curran - 7

1 match: 3 wickets

Got one chance, and did his job with the ball. Even that was an unfamiliar role in the second half of the innings. Encouraging stuff.

Tom Curran - 7

2 matches: 56 runs at 28; 0 wickets

Brilliant with the bat in the second game and solid in the third. With the ball, the wickets column does not tell the story – bowled nicely, and went at just 4.25 an over.

Adil Rashid - 5

3 matches: 51 runs at 51; 4 wickets

Not his series with the ball. Used in uber-aggressive fashion by Morgan – as typified by being asked to bowl the final over of the series – but Australia took him on with success.

Jofra Archer - 7

3 matches: 7 wickets

Bowled beautifully in the first two games, but struggled in the third, notably with the no-ball let-off for Alex Carey. Returned to bowl a superb 49th over in that game, though.

Mark Wood - 6

2 matches: 3 wickets

Did very well in the first game, missed the second, then was solid in the third. Overall, did himself no harm.
