Andrew Strauss: We must prove point to the world

Taking flight: Andrew Strauss leaves Heathrow
10 April 2012

Andrew Strauss has challenged England and Pakistan to set an example by ensuring this winter's Test series is played in a good spirit.

England arrived in Dubai earlier today to prepare for their matches against Pakistan, knowing that the spot-fixing scandal that blighted the last series between the teams in 2010 remains a prominent backdrop. Last year, Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif were jailed for their part in those events and Mohammad Amir was sent to a young offenders' institution.

And Pakistan have called up three players - Umar Akmal, Wahab Riaz and Imran Farhat - who were named during the trial.

Test captain Strauss said: "There is a perception that there are always issues between Pakistan and England and I think we should see this series as a chance to erode or eradicate that perception. If we both approach it in the right spirit, it should be good for relations between the two teams but also for world cricket in general.

"It is Pakistan's obligation and duty to pick the best side available. The spot-fixing stuff is something we are desperately keen to move on from. I don't think there's any good that can come from churning it all up again."

Australia skittled out India for 191 and reached 116 for three at stumps on a dramatic opening day in the Second Test at Sydney.
