Count on the mud-loving Kalca Mome

14 April 2012

Kalca Mome boasts a cracking record on his favoured soft ground and Philip Hobbs' charge looks the wise wager to win the feature chase at Hereford today (2.10).

The eight-year-old advertised his preference for cut in the ground at Cheltenham last time where he belied a lack of confidence in the market to beat Bohemian Spirit a shade cosily.

That victory signalled a real return to form for Kalca Mome who already includes a Hereford victory, admittedly over hurdles, on his CV.

While the handicapper has understandably reacted to his Cheltenham win, the gelding's ability to handle conditions should ensure he is on the premises with Richard Johnson, responsible for four of his career wins, on board.

Fontwell and Bangor stage the other jumping fixtures and REGAL HEIGHTS (Bangor, 1.20) may be worth supporting at the latter venue to continue the decent run of Donald McCain jnr.

Admittedly, he didn't show a great deal behind My Way de Solzen at Lingfield last time, but his previous effort at Carlisle in the race won by Tidal Fury has been boosted since and his stable are firing again now.

EAU GOOD (Wolverhampton, nap, 3.50) earns the nap vote after a decent effort in defeat over the minimum trip at Southwell on Thursday.

Punters who backed Michael Chapman's charge into odds-on may not agree that it was a solid run, but the drop in trip on the Fibresand was all against the selection who needed to be driven along from an early stage.

He had previously looked to have improved thanks to a gelding operation when running out a fluent winner over today's course and distance and he is worth supporting to atone for Thursday's reverse.

LA COLLINE (Southwell, 3.35) should get the fast pace she requires courtesy of the front-running Larky's Lob and can continue her rapid rate of improvement in the finale at the Newark venue.

Betting exchange punters may look to Summer Lodge as a potential lay in Southwell's 3.05. Much as I respect rookie trainer Alan McCabe, his three-year-old has been beaten in tight finishes once or twice too often and is worth taking on with the A-team, Abandon and Arsad.
