Clubs show no interest in Intertoto

14 April 2012

English clubs have snubbed the Intertoto Cup for the second successive season.

The Football Association have informed UEFA they will not be providing any representatives for Europe's summer competition, through which three teams gain access to the UEFA Cup.

Spanish side Villarreal took advantage of the tournament this season and face Celtic in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals tonight.

In past seasons, Fulham, Bradford and Aston Villa have taken part in the event but they all felt the exertions had a negative impact and no Premiership sides have been tempted to enter.

The same does not apply in Scotland, however, where Hibernian have confirmed their desire to take part. They will face either Lithuanian or Estonian opposition in the second qualifying round in July. Wales also will provide an entrant.
