Carrick could be back to face United

West Ham are hoping to have young England midfielder Michael Carrick back for their Premiership match against Manchester United at Upton Park on Saturday week.

Carrick is back in light training following a groin operation almost five weeks ago.

Manager Glenn Roeder said: "We're hoping that Michael will make the Manchester United match but it will be touch and go."

Roeder is hopeful that Northern Ireland international midfielder Steve Lomas will also be ready to return for the match against United.

Lomas strained knee ligaments against Middlesbrough 11 days ago and the West Ham manager said: "Steve could also have a chance for the United match but we will see how things go."
