Cardiff stop Hasselbaink training as contract dispute heats us

13 April 2012

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is locked in a bitter contract row with Cardiff City after he was turned away from pre-season training.

The 36-year-old striker reported for duty at the club’s Vale of Glamorgan training base only to be told he was not part of their plans. Hasselbaink is entitled to a new one-year deal under the terms of his contract after making 36 League appearances last season, as well as Cardiff’s first FA Cup Final in 81 years.

Hasselbaink: Looks to have played his last game for Cardiff

But the club claim they had a verbal agreement with him to waive that condition as they desperately try to offload Hasselbaink’s £15,000-a-week wages in the battle to ease debts totalling more than £24m.

The PFA have been dragged in to broker a peace deal, and the former Chelsea and Middlesbrough striker insisted it was ‘not an appropriate time’ to comment.

But a club source said: ‘Both sides have reached a stand-off which needs to be resolved as soon as possible. Jimmy has been left in limbo, but he looks to have played his last game for Cardiff.’
