Capriati's Advanta advance

Jennifer Capriati beat fellow American Meghann Shaughnessy 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the Advanta Championships in Philadelphia to remain in the hunt for a spot in the WTA Tour Championship.

Capriati, battling Vera Zvonareva and Venus and Serena Williams for the two remaining berths in the $3million event in Los Angeles, became the first player to reach the Advanta quarter-finals.

Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova, already guaranteed a place in next week's eight-player field, went through after her opponent, Croatian Jelena Kostanic, retired hurt.
