Capriati pushed all the way

13 April 2012

Jennifer Capriati led a parade of top seeds into the quarter-finals of the Nasdaq-100 Open Masters but again she was a little out of step, struggling to a 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 win over Uzbekistan's Iroda Tulyaganova.

Pushed to three sets by Russia's Anastina Myskina in the third round, the world No1 needed all her energy and just over two hours to tame the 19thranked Tulyaganova in a baseline battle that finished after midnight.

Venus Williams and Martina Hingis, who between them have claimed the last five Miami Masters titles, Kim Clijsters and Monica Seles all reached the last eight with relative ease.

Defending champion Venus Williams beat Amanda Coetzer 6-2, 6-0 in 44 minutes, Serena Williams brushed past American compatriot Marissa Irvin 6-1, 6-4, Hingis crushed Alexandra Stevenson 6-2, 6-0 and Seles defeated Silvia Farina Elia 7-6, 6-4.
