British trio advance

British trio Sir Chris Hoy, Matt Crampton and Jason Kenny qualified for the knockout rounds of the men's sprint on day four of the Track Cycling World Championships in Copenhagen.

Hoy, who won Britain's only gold of the championships so far in the men's keirin on Thursday, progressed in 9.913 seconds, behind only defending champion Gregory Bauge of France.

Bauge clocked 9.896secs, while Crampton finished in 10.037s and Kenny, the Olympic silver medallist in the event behind Hoy, recorded 10.073s.

Four-time Olympic champion Hoy will continue his bid to reclaim the title he won in 2008 this afternoon, with tomorrow's final day of competition staging the semi-finals and final.

The Scot missed last year's World Championships after suffering a hip injury at the venue for this year's competition in February 2009.

Britain's hopes of adding to their solitary gold medal so far on day four rest on Victoria Pendleton.

The 29-year-old will meet Anna Meares - winner of two of Australia's five gold medals so far - in the women's sprint final this afternoon.

Pendleton is chasing a fourth successive women's sprint title and a fifth in six years, as well as her eighth world champion's rainbow jersey in all.

Lizzie Armitstead was well placed after the opening event of the women's omnium, a multi-event discipline which is now incorporated into the Olympic programme.

Armitstead, who won a silver medal in the team pursuit on day two, clocked 12.022s in the 200m time trial, ranking sixth.
