Bertogliati grabs Tour lead

13 April 2012

By winning the opening road stage of the Tour de France, the Italian Lampre Daikin team have carried on where they left off in last year's race.

Sprinter Jan Svorada won the Tour's final stage in 2001 in Paris and this time Rubens Bertogliati clinched stage one of this year's Tour in Luxembourg to take the race leader's yellow jersey from three-times champion Lance Armstrong.

"We're really happy, It's great to carry on winning," said team manager Beppe Saronni.

"As well as winning the stage and taking the race leader's yellow jersey, Bertogliati is also the leader of the best young rider competition."

Scotland's David Millar is lying fifth overall - four minutes 69 seconds behind Bertogliati.

Today's second stage takes the cyclists from Luxembourg to Sarrbrucken over 181 kilometres.
