Bell wins 50th cap as England bowl

Ian Bell won his 50th Test cap as England, as expected, chose six specialist batsmen against South Africa at Centurion.

Bell was named to bat at number six in a predictable team for this first Test of four - containing a four-man attack of James Anderson, Graham Onions, Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann.

Glorious sunshine greeted the start of this match. But the pitch still had a green tinge to it and on winning the toss, England captain Andrew Strauss unsurprisingly decided to bowl first.

South Africa were hit by a major last-minute blow when their pace spearhead Dale Steyn was declared unfit because of his hamstring strain, meaning a Test debut for Friedel de Wet.

Stuart Broad captured the key wicket of Graeme Smith for a duck, in only the second over of the match.

Broad got Smith with only his third delivery, short down the leg-side and the home captain gloving the ball behind for a diving Matt Prior to take an athletic catch.

Broad also troubled Smith's fellow opener Ashwell Prince with another short ball which leapt to hit the left-hander on the shoulder on its way for four leg-byes.

Prince soon put South Africa's first authentic boundary in the book, though, straight-driving Anderson.

After half-an-hour's batting, Prince and Hashim Amla had taken the score to 15 for one.
