Bangladesh make slow progress

12 April 2012

Bangladesh recovered from the early loss of opener Junaid Siddique to reach an unspectacular 34 for one at lunch on the first day of the first Test against New Zealand in Chittagong on Friday.

Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat but the tourists made an early breakthrough with just the seventh ball of the day as Iain O`Brien`s inswinging delivery rapped Siddique full on the foot to dismiss the opener lbw for a duck.

The right-arm seamer almost claimed a second wicket the very next ball as he induced Rajin Saleh into an edge behind but wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum spilled the chance.

Tamim Iqbal was next to be given a reprieve when he was dropped at second slip by Aaron Redmond off the bowling of Kyle Mills.

Iqbal brought up the first boundary of the day in the 14th over when he drove Jacob Oram to the fence as Bangladesh made painfully slow progress.

New Zealand were proving sloppy in the field and Redmond put down Iqbal for a second time at short leg when the opener top-edged an attempted sweep.

Iqbal celebrated his good fortune by belting Daniel Vettori over mid-on for four as the hosts crawled in for the lunch interval.
