Baggies boss Mowbray targets Collins after missing out on Bougherra

13 April 2012

manager Tony Mowbray may turn to defender James Collins after his efforts to land Madjid Bougherra came to nothing last week.

The Welsh international appears to be surplus to requirements at Upton Park this season as he is not considered to be part of Alan Curbishley's first-choice XI.

On the move? West Ham defender James Collins is a target for Premier League new boys West Brom.

And with a cash squeeze currently taking place at the club, the 24-year-old central defender is a favourite to be culled.

Mowbray may have to wait while Collins, who last season underwent knee surgery, has proved his fitness with the Eastenders.

But he is short of cover having lost Martin Albrechtsen to Derby County on a free transfer. Gianni Zuiverloon, a £3.2m capture from Holland, is currently on duty at the Olympics.

Having lost out on the chase for Bougherra to Rangers and having seen former club target Danny Shittu seal a move to Bolton Wanderers, Mowbray is in need of cover at centre-half and Collins appears to be the most likely target.
