Awesome Inkster grabs US title

13 April 2012

American Juli Inkster shot a final round of 66 to claim her second US Women's Open title at Prairie Dunes in Kansas.

Inkster, the 1999 winner, finished on four-under-par 276, two clear of Sweden's Annika Sorenstam, with Australia's Shani Waugh a distant third on 283. Mhairi McKay, with a 70 for sixth place on 286, was the leading British challenger.

Overnight leaders Sorenstam did little wrong in a level par round but it was not good enough to match 42-year-old Inkster, who birdied the second, sixth and seventh holes and then took the lead with another birdie at the 11th. "It's awesome," she said. "I knew I had nothing to lose and my game just all fell into place."

It was over the same course in 1980 that the Californian won the first of her three successive US Amateur titles.
