Attoh tipped for top coaching honours

14 April 2012

Former AAA triple jump champion Frank Attoh could be the most successful British coach at this month's Olympics.

That's the opinion of his pupil Yamile Aldama who threw down the gauntlet to Russian Tatyana Lebedeva, favourite for the women's triple jump gold medal in Athens, with victory in Linz on Monday night.

However, if Attoh's proteges Aldama and his latest big find Trecia Smith achieve their goals in just under three weeks' time, it will be in the colours of Sudan and Jamaica.

Aldama set a new African record of 15.28metres in Linz and got within six centimetres of current world No.1 Lebedeva.

Now the Cuban-born star, who lives in London, is confident she can win gold. But Aldama, who opted for Sudanese citizenship in January after being refused a British passport, also believes her training partner will come up trumps in Greece.

In Linz, Smith improved the Jamaican record with a jump of

15.16m and Aldama said: 'I've been expecting it from her some time this summer. I don't see her as just a training partner but a threat for the gold medal.'
