'I'll be getting that gold': Kyle Langford makes Tokoyo 2020 medal promise

Coming into London 2017, Kyle Langford was ranked 46th in the world but having just missed out on a medal in the 800metres, he has set his sights on Olympic gold.

After struggling in his heat, the 21-year-old was given little chance of making an impact in the final but missed out on bronze by just 0.04 seconds last night.

“In Tokyo, I won’t be making that mistake,” he said. “I promise you I will be getting that gold.”

Langford has not lacked for confidence since first joining a British Athletics training camp in Kenya at the end of 2014.

And for an athlete not even discussed as a medal hope heading into these championships, he came agonisingly close to a place on the podium with a blistering finish down the home straight.

“I’ve got a funny mentality of wanting to win everything I do,” he said. “You sit down and say, ‘fourth, I’ll take that’ but I know in my heart that I wanted to get a medal so it’s really gutting not getting it.

“I told my coach that I want to make the final and, when I make the final, I want to pull something off and win a medal.

“I did come here to win and I was so close. I just have to take it on the chin and try to learn from this inexperience.”

Tom Bedford, his former coach, had previously said Langford boasts the X-Factor while the athlete himself knows he has a long future ahead of him.

“I am only 21 so I have got so much time,” he added. “I have said that I will win an Olympic gold medal and that is my aspiration. That is what I am training for in the hard winters.”
