Last season, Arsenal were only seven minutes from winning the FA Cup when Michael Owen scored twice to give Liverpool a 2-1 victory. It was the first time Arsenal had lost an FA Cup Final to the Reds. In 1950 the Gunners beat Liverpool 2-0 and then in 1971 Arsenal's Eddie Kelly became the first substitute to score in the Final. Phil Thompson, Liverpool's caretaker manager, came on as substitute for the Reds that day, but could not stop them losing 2-1.
