Anxious wait for Shanklin

12 April 2012

Tom Shanklin faces an anxious wait as medics assess an injury that could end his dreams of touring South Africa with the British and Irish Lions.

The Wales centre injured his shoulder late in Cardiff Blues' Magners League victory over Newport Gwent Dragons at the Arms Park on Wednesday night.

The 29-year-old was taken for an X-ray on Wednesday night but is now to have a further MRI scan to assess the full extent of the damage.

A statement read: "The Cardiff Blues medical team will hopefully have a more detailed update available by the weekend."

Shanklin's injury, just weeks before the squad's departure for South Africa, provides another headache for coach Ian McGeechan.

Ireland scrum-half Tomas O'Leary has already been ruled out with a broken ankle while Munster flanker Alan Quinlan faces a disciplinary hearing that could lead to a ban.
