As an American in 19th-century Paris, Whistler became friends with Monet, and both admired their British near contemporary, Turner.

This sure-fire-hit presents them as the triumvirate who changed the course of landscape painting, and charts their artistic dialogue through 100 paintings, watercolours, prints and pastels.

The first room features Turners that were on show when Whistler and Monet came to town, while another displays each of their impressions of Venice's affecting light and shade.

Nocturnes, Whistler's dreamy paintings of London by night, are given a section of their own.

Thur 10 Feb-Sun 15 May, Tate Britain, Millbank, SW1 (0207-887 8000).
