The heroes of the London Olympics were cheered to the rafters by stars of entertainment as Team GB was honoured at the GQ Men of the Year awards.

Comic actor James Corden did the “Mobot” as athletes including Mo Farah, Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton and Christine Ohuruogo took to the Royal Opera House stage and stole the show from other award winners including Robbie Williams and Sir Salman Rushdie.

Presenting the Olympians with the GQ team of the year award, Lord Coe, chairman of the Games organising committee, recalled the 29 gold, 17 silver and 19 bronze medal tally, now boosted by Paralympian success.

Cyclist Bradley Wiggins also got a lifetime achievement award, while Thomas Heatherwick, the Olympics cauldron designer, was named Alfred Dunhill “cultural icon”. Politician of the year Mayor Boris Johnson paid tribute to the athletes but also to the volunteers and transport workers who made the Games work.

Corden, just back from starring in One Man, Two Guvnors on Broadway, won the editor’s special award. He said the cheers for the Olympians and Paralympians in the room reflected the mood of Britain as an “incredibly proud” country.
