Sugababes singer Amelle Berrabah spent a night in a police cell after she was arrested on suspicion of assault.

The 23-year-old pop star was taken to Guildford Police Station, Surrey, after a Saturday night brawl on the dance floor of nightspot Bar Met, according to reports.

The alleged victim is an 18-year-old woman.

Miss Berrabah is reported to have given a statement about the alleged incident at 7am yesterday, before joining bandmates Keisha Buchanan and Heidi Range on a flight to America.

A Sugababes' spokeswoman told The Mirror: "There was an incident on Saturday night and Amelle is helping police with their inquiries. I can't say more than that because she is on a flight to LA."

Surrey Police is reported to have confirmed the incident, saying: "A 23-year-old female was arrested in Guildford town centre following an incident in a bar.

"She has been released on police bail pending further inquiries."

Last week, it was announced the band are launching a Barbie collection which will be available in UK toy stores in May.

Each band member has created a doll's look including clothes, hair colour and skin tone.

Toy manufacturer Mattel expects the £9.99 Sugababes' dolls to outsell Barbies designed by Girls Aloud which went on sale in November 2005.

The Sugababes are one of the most successful girl bands of recent years although it was their third line-up when Miss Berrabah joined in December 2005, replacing original member Mutya Buena.

The band made their chart debut in 2000 with the single Overload, when the line-up was Keisha Buchanan, Siobhan Donaghy and Miss Buena.

Miss Donaghy quit in 2001 and was replaced by Heidi Range.

The band made UK chart history in 2002 when they became the youngest female group to top the chart with Freak Like Me.

In October last year they were said to be the most successful all-girl band of the past six years, by the book of British Hit Singles And Albums, after 16 hits in six years.

A hit is defined by the book as a track which charts in the top 75.

The band joined girl group Girls Aloud to perform this year's Comic Relief single, a cover version of the Run-DMC hit Walk This Way.
