Crime drama Broadchurch has been the subject of an unprecedented betting spree as fans wager tens of thousands of pounds on the identity of the murderer.

ITV’s eight-part mystery reaches its climax tonight, and has attracted an audience of more than nine million viewers. The series follows the aftermath of the murder of Danny Latimer, 11, and the killer’s identity has been kept a closely guarded secret, with no previews of tonight’s episode released to prevent any leaks.

Joe Miller, husband of detective Ellie Miller, is the favourite to be named as the killer of Danny, found strangled at the foot of cliffs in a Dorset town. A spokesman for William Hill said: “We’ve never seen betting like this before for what is such a niche market. It’s certainly captured the public’s imagination. We’ve never taken betting on a crime series before — it was purely because of the huge level of interest we received.

“So far, the money has been spread evenly across all of the suspects. We had a conference in the office and the consensus was that we thought Joe Miller was the prime suspect, hence he is our favourite.”

The drama stars Olivia Colman as Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller and David Tennant as her colleague, Detective Inspector Alec Hardy. Joe Miller is at 4/5, with son Tom the second favourite at 11/4. Rev Paul Coates is 6/1, followed by poacher Nige Carter at 9/1 and telephone engineer Steve Connelly at 12/1.

It is believed only 29 people in the country know the identity of the killer — the cast and crew involved with tonight’s 65-minute episode, which airs at 9pm.
