Victoria Beckham has taken a remarkable swipe at wives and girlfriends of other England football stars – saying they’re content to sponge off their husbands instead of carving out their own careers.

In a clear dig at the glamorous young WAGs who enjoy lavish lifestyles without holding down jobs, Victoria insists that her success, her high profile and her bank balance are all down to her own hard work.

She says: ‘I’ve always been driven. I’m a worker. I’ve never been given anything on a plate.

‘That’s why I was different from some of the other footballers’ wives. It never really interested me, that lifestyle of spending your husband’s money.’

In her interview with Allure magazine, Victoria, 34, says she loves America because it has accepted her as a fashion designer. She adds: ‘I’m not sure I would have been given the same opportunities in Britain.’
