Ordinary people, extraordinary lives. They may not have royal credentials but these Londoners have been pictured by the Queen's personal photographer because of what they have achieved.

Terry O'Neill - more used to working with the rich and famous - took nine portraits which will go on display at the Tate Modern gallery on Bankside this evening for a reception to celebrate London Day.

The group - chosen from 1,200 nominated for their community involvement or a selfless personal act - includes Andrew Barnes, a police officer who received a Royal Humane Society bravery award. Tonight's event marks the third anniversary of Mayor Ken Livingstone and the Greater London Authority taking office.
