New Doctor Who star Matt Smith made his first appearance as the time lord today sporting a preppy look in a tweed jacket and bow tie — a change in sartorial direction for the Doctor after David Tennant's sharp suits and trainers.

Smith's old-fashioned look, complemented with black boots and rolled-up trouser legs, has echoes of Patrick Troughton, right, who wore a floppy bow tie when he played the second Doctor in the late Sixties.

New look: Matt Smith poses as Dr Who with Karen Gillan

Smith, 26, began filming in Cardiff today with Scottish actress Karen Gillan, who plays the time traveller's latest companion, Amy Pond.

He said he was thrilled to play the 11th incarnation of the Doctor: "I feel very privileged and proud to be part of this iconic show.

The scripts are brilliant and working alongside Karen and the rest of the crew is an inspiration because their work ethic and passion for the show is so admirable."

The 13-episode series is due to air next spring, after David Tennant's final three Doctor Who specials later this year.
