Natalie Appleton has the dubious honour of being the first celebrity ever to face five bushtucker trials. Now it seems she has had enough. The former All Saint today honoured her repeated threats and quit the I'm A Celebrity jungle show.

According to reports from Australia the 31-year-old announced her decision to leave shortly after learning that the public had voted for her to undergo a challenge for a record fifth time.

The live feed to the ITV2 show was cut without warning shortly after midnight GMT - about 10am Australian time. It was resumed half an hour later, by which time there was no sign of Natalie in camp. "Nat refused to do her trial and walked out," said a source at the camp, near Murwillumbah, New South Wales.

British viewers picked Appleton to undergo the On Your Knees task - said to be the most "evil" ordeal yet. She faced being buried up to her neck in a swamp, then having rats and snakes dumped on her head.

Earlier, she had pulled out of her fourth trial after winning her campmates only one meal. She complained of feeling sick and broke down in tears after a brief dip in an eel-infested pond. After being told viewers had picked her for yet another challenge, Appleton cried: "You're absolutely kidding me. I've got nothing left. Don't you feel sorry? Aren't you bored of me? I'm doing a different show to everyone else."

The others rushed to comfort her despite their frustration at diminishing food stocks. "You've got to laugh," said Janet Street-Porter.

Show producers were said to have desperately tried to persuade Appleton to stay. "The fact that the camp was running out of food was beginning to stir up a few tensions as well," said one insider.

Three Degree Sheila Ferguson is believed to have taken over the trial.
