He is most famous for playing the giant Hagrid in the Harry Potter films.

But earlier this week Robbie Coltrane slipped into the role of another generously proportioned screen character.

During a trip to a Los Angeles theme park, the 58-year-old actor and comedian was persuaded by his children to take part in a picture stunt to morph his face onto the body of the animated green ogre Shrek.

Coltrane, who weighs around 24 stone, was visiting the Universal Studios park with Spencer, 15, and Alice, ten. In the searing heat, he spent much of the rest of the day sitting in the shade smoking.

In the six hours he spent at the park, Coltrane went almost unnoticed and was spotted only by two or three children who asked for his autograph.

He separated from his wife Rhona Gemmell five years ago, but it is understood that the couple are giving their marriage another try.

According to locals they are living under the same roof at the Harry Potter star's estate at Dumgoyne, near Loch Lomond in Scotland.

One source in Los Angeles even suggested that Miss Gemmell had joined the family on their American holiday. However, Coltrane's agent was unavailable to confirm that last night.

The actor, who played Rubeus Hagrid in the Potter films, was devastated by the break-up from Miss Gemmell.

In an interview last year, he banned any questions about his private life but has since started referring to her as 'my missus' again.
