Russell Crowe has caused a furore in New Zealand after allegedly breaking a ban on smoking in public

The 41-year-old Oscar-winner was performing with his band The Ordinary Fear of God when he lit up on stages in Leigh, Auckland and Wellington.

The venue owners could face heavy fines if a complaint is made. Crowe's promoter said he did not know whether the actor knew that smoking in public was illegal.
