Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk has stormed the box office during its opening weekend, taking an impressive $106 million globally.

The World War II epic made $50.5 million in the US since its release on Friday, surpassing initial estimations, and $12 million in the UK alone.

The critically-acclaimed film, starring Fion Whitehead and Cillian Murphy, raked in $55.4 million outside of the US in its first 46 markets.

Opening in 637 cinemas across the UK, the film made $1.6 million at IMAX venues, beating US comedy Girls Trip into second place.

Josh Berger, President and Managing Director of Warner Bros said: “Christopher Nolan has created a film that brings this extraordinary event to the screen in a thrilling and uniquely real cinematic experience.

“Critics and audiences alike agree that Dunkirk must be seen on the biggest possible screen, and we anticipate that the incredible response among audiences across the UK will drive continued success well into the summer.”

Speaking about his first ever acting role, Harry Styles said: “Our part of the film is just a straight survival story, and what really sticks with me is the idea that when you’re a soldier – especially in a situation as intense and chaotic as this – it doesn’t matter what the guy next to you does or if you even know his name, if he’s wearing the same uniform as you, you’re a team.

“It’s you and him, and you’re going to get through this together – and that says a lot, actually. It might be flowery BS, but it’s just pure camaraderie.”

The One Direction star also hinted that this might be his first and last film, saying that he might be “one and done”.
