Fans have been treated to a first look at Will Smith’s debut as the blue Genie in the upcoming live action remake of Disney's Aladdin.

The trailer dropped during Sunday night’s Grammy Awards, showing Smith in character complete with deep blue skin and the signature black goatee from the animated classic.

His witty take on the loveable character sees him ask a confused Aladdin: “You don’t know who I am? Genie, wishes, lamp, none of that ringing a bell?”

Smith also mocked followers with the reveal by encouraging them to “trust him” after he appeared in a string of teaser images without Genie’s iconic blue hue.

Sharing a clip from the trailer, he wrote: “I told y’all I was gon’ be Blue!! Y’all need to trust me more often!”

Excited fans admitted they “can’t wait to watch” the upcoming film.

One user wrote: “OH MY GOD CAN’T WAIT.”

Another commented: “Wow this is my fav Disney Film, I am super exited (sic).”

A third added: “Will Smith will save this movie!!!”

The trailer also teased a special look at Mena Massoud as the titular hero, an evil-looking Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) and Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott).

Speaking about the role Smith told Entertainment Weekly: “Whenever you’re doing things that are iconic, it’s always terrifying. The question is always, 'Where was there meat left on the bone?' Robin didn’t leave a lot of meat on the bone with the character.

“I started to feel confident that I could deliver something that was an homage to Robin Williams but was musically different. I think it’ll stand out as unique even in the Disney world. There hasn’t been a lot of that hip-hop flavour in Disney history.”

Aladdin will be released in cinemas on May 24
