Vanity Fair’s annual Tribeca Film Festival kicked off last night with a party on the steps of the New York State Supreme Courthouse.

The party was hosted by Robert De Niro and attended by celebrities including Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Billy Crystal.

The first film shown at the festival will be the world premiere of romantic comedy The Five-Year Engagement, which stars Jason Segel and Emily Blunt.

But although the festival launches with a high profile Hollywood movie, the 12-day festival features mostly independent cinema. From almost 6,000 submissions, Tribeca 2012 will screen 89 feature films split between 57 fiction and 32 documentaries, including 50 world premieres.

The festival is one of the largest in the United States was co-founded by Robert De Niro as a way to revive downtown Manhattan after the Sept. 11 attacks.
