Tony Hadley has revealed that he has quit Spandau Ballet after four decades with the band.

The lead singer of the 1980s new wave pop group has said that the decision is “beyond" his control, hinting at internal problems with band mates.

"Due to circumstances beyond my control, it is with deep regret that I am required to state that I am no longer a member of the band Spandau Ballet,” Hadley wrote on Twitter on Monday.

He went on to confirm that he would “not be performing with the band in the future.”

A separate statement was posted on the band’s official Twitter account, suggesting that it had been Hadley’s decision to quit.

“Much to the frustration of the band, Tony had made it clear in September 2016 that he didn't want to work with the band anymore,” it read.

"This has not changed and 2015 was the last time we were able to perform or work with him. So we have now made the decision to move on as a band."

After forming back in 1976 and enjoying a string of top 10 hits including Gold, True and Only When You Leave, the band first split in 1990 amid a row over royalties.

Gary Kemp won a court case against his fellow band members over the money made through song-writing loyalties.

Hadley and the Kemp brothers didn’t speak for a number of years, with the frontman saying that a reunion wouldn’t be likely even if “hell is frozen.”

The original line-up then reunited in 2009 and released a brand new album, Once More, ahead of two world tours and a headline set at the Isle of Wight Festival.
