Claire Foy, Vanessa Kirby and Matt Smith launched the eagerly-awaited second season of The Crown with a lavish red carpet premiere, after admitting that it could be “uneasy” viewing for the Royals.

Normally reserved for big-screen films, the hit Netflix show celebrated its comeback in style at the Odeon, Leicester Square on Tuesday night in front of a crowd of fans.

Foy, who reprises her role as Queen Elizabeth II for one more season before Olivia Colman takes over, was centre stage in a floor-length sequinned gown.

Smith, who plays Prince Philip and Kirby, who plays Princess Margaret, were also on hand to promote the new season, which lands next week.

Earlier in the day, Foy and Smith admitted that the new season could well be “uneasy” viewing for the Queen herself as it delves into Prince Philip’s alleged infidelities and the family’s connection to the Nazi party.

When asked about the monarch’s potential reaction, Smith told Metro: “That can’t be easy viewing, can it?”

Foy simply added: “I don’t want to know. Or she’s like, ‘Finally. Everyone’s on my side.’”

Rising star Billy Jenkins, who plays a young Prince Charles, was also on the red carpet, and seemed more enamoured with the corgis that his high profile co-stars.

The young actor was spotted playing with the dogs on the red carpet before they made their grand entrance into the cinema.

Other cast members including Greg Wise, who plays Lord Mountbatten, and Alex Jennings, who plays the Duke of Windsor were in attendance.
