Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj have become embroiled in a war of words on Twitter following the MTV VMA nominations announcement.

Blank Space singer Swift directly hit back at Minaj after she criticised the music channel for snubbing her video Anaconda in the prestigious Video of the Year category.

While Minaj didn't directly reference Swift in her original tweets, she alluded to 'other' women who had been nominated instead of her in a series of posts, which were meant as a comment on racism in the music industry.

Appearing to reference Swift's record-breaking Bad Blood, Minaj added: "When the "other" girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination."

A couple of hours later, Minaj added: "If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year.

"Oh but trust me. I'll be on that stage to collect my awards for vid of the year. Feeling Myself & Anaconda."

Obviously aware that the rapper's tweets were about her, Swift then decided to directly address the issue with Minaj.

She tweeted her, saying: "I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot."

Swift added: "If I win, please come up with me!! You're invited to any stage I'm ever on."

Believing that Swift had missed her point about racism in the music industry and was trying to make the issue more about a personal feud, Minaj replied:

"Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn't say a word about u. I love u just as much. But u should speak on this. TaylorSwift13."

She added: "I'm so glad u guys get to see how this stuff works. Taylor took her music off spotify and was applauded. We launched Tidal & were dragged."

Swift received nine nominations for Bad Blood and Blank Space while Minaj received two for Ananconda.
