Celebrities have shared messages of support for former Welsh rugby captain Gareth Thomas after he revealed he is HIV positive.

Thomas, 45, came out as gay in 2009 and is thought to be the first UK sportsman to speak out about living with the virus.

“I’ve been living with this secret for years,” he told the Sunday Mirror. “I’ve felt shame and keeping such a big secret has taken its toll.”

The sports star told the publication that his diagnosis initially left him in a “dark place” and that he had experienced suicidal thoughts.

He said that he wanted to speak out about his experience with the virus in order to “help others and make a difference.”

David Furnish and husband Sir Elton John were among the famous names share supportive mesages for Thomas.

Sharing a photo of the sportsman on Instagram, Furnish praised him for “courageously” opening up about his diagnosis and described him as a “hero.”

“Dear Gareth, Thank you for courageously sharing your HIV-positive status with the world,” he wrote. “You are a shining example of someone living a full, healthy and happy life with HIV.

“Good luck with today’s Ironman Wales competition. Elton and I are cheering you on. The world needs more heroes like you.”

Writing on Twitter, TV presenter Davina McCall said: “Me and my whole family are behind you all the way. Anything I can do to help you in any way I am here. WE LOVE YOU GARETH.”

Denise Van Outen also paid tribute on Twitter, commenting: “You are a wonderful man and we are all supporting you @gareththomas14.”

Sports pundit Gabby Logan wrote “Love you GT as always xx” while Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes described Thomas as “a legend through and through,” adding: “I am sending so much love, hugs and strength to you.”
