Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiere - Joseph Gordon-Levitt channels his inner jedi as he graces the red carpet as Yoda

Joseph Gordon-Levitt ignored the rule about keeping costumes to a minimum as he turned up for the Star Wars: The Force Awakens world premiere as Yoda.

The actor, 34, shunned the traditional suit in favour of the jedi master's white gown - a bath robe - complete with green face paint and pointed ears.

He teamed the look with a green hat, Grinch patterned trousers and green and pink converses.

The 500 Days of Summer actor is a huge fan of the space travelling franchise and is keen to star in episode VIII - which is being directed by his close friend Rian Johnson.

When asked if he would like a role, he told Cinemablend: "Of course! I knock on his door every day, and I'm like, 'Am I in the movie yet? Am I in the movie yet? Dude! No, seriously dude. It's important to me! I want to be in the movie!'"

Gordon-Levitt attended the hugely anticipated premiere which was flanked with stars, both old and new, including Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley and John Boyega.

It marked one of the biggest premieres in history and saw four blocks cordoned off and tight security to prevent piracy.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set for UK cinema release on December 17.
