Logic is the key to clever storage - design cupboard and shelf space according to the size of the items you need to store.

Storage is useless if you can't access anything - stick to narrow shelves and shallow drawers.

Blinds or screens are a great way to hide messy shelves or ugly electrical equipment.

Window seats are great for storing bulky items.

In the kitchen, free up cupboard space by hanging saucepans and ladles on rails with steel S-hooks.

Stow out-of-season clothes in boxes under the bed.

In tiny bedrooms, replace cumbersome cupboard doors with curtains or sliding shutters.

Build a 'step' in the bottom of your wardrobe to double shoe storage space.

Suspend cupboards and shelves a few inches off the floor - it creates the illusion of space.

Look for multipurpose furniture like Habitat's height-adjustable 'Jaq' table which converts into a dining table.
