Sir John Hurt has admitted that he is ‘thrilled’ to have been given the all-clear following his battle with cancer.

The Harry Potter actor revealed the good news on Tuesday night at the Man Booker Prize ceremony, saying that he was ‘overjoyed’ after a visit to the doctor that morning.

He said: “I had a final scan and it’s all gone brilliantly. I had the final scan yesterday and I saw my oncologist this morning.

“I am overjoyed, I am thrilled. It all looks great for the future, it’s fantastic.”

Hurt, 75, revealed that he was ‘optimistic’ about his prospects when he was diagnosed back in June.

He said: “I'm not feeling any of the side effects you're supposed to feel, or at least you can feel, as everybody's different I'm told.

'It's extraordinary, I haven't lost weight or anything and I'm feeling good - it's crazy."

The 1984 actor added: "My oncologist is extremely optimistic, as indeed I am, so everything is going really well."

Hurt announced his diagnosis in a statement back in June, which read: "I have always been open about the way in which I conduct my life and in that spirit I would like to make a statement.

"I have recently been diagnosed with early stage pancreatic cancer. I am undergoing treatment and am more than optimistic about a satisfactory outcome, as indeed is the medical team.

“I am continuing to focus on my professional commitments and will shortly be recording Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell (one of life’s small ironies!) for BBC Radio 4.”
