Simon Pegg set to co-write Star Trek 3 after Richard Orci pulls out

Simon Pegg will co-write the new Star Trek 3 film after screenwriter Richard Orci pulled out.

Pegg, 44, confirmed the news via the official Simon Pegg news account this morning.

The tweet read: “It's true! Simon is currently working on the screenplay for the third Star Trek film with Dark Blue writer, Doug Jung. – HC.”

The Hot Fuzz actor will have the help of Doug Jung, the creator of American series Dark Blue.

Fast & Furious director Justin Lin has stepped in to direct the sci-fi film after Orci – who was also set to direct the new hit – stepped down.

As well as penning the screenplay, Pegg is set to reprise his role as engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, which he has played since starring in JJ Abrams's 2013 film, Star Trek Into Darkness.

Pegg has previously penned scripts including his “cornetto series” - Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End.

The scheduled release date for the third film in the franchise is July 2016.
