Ryan Gosling may have been nominated for an Oscar – but he was close to being overshadowed by his sister.

Gosling, 36, took his sister Mandi Gosling, 40, along to the Academy Awards on Sunday night and she quickly sent social media into meltdown.

Viewers questioned who Ryan’s date was, while others couldn’t take their eyes off of her stunning gold gown which featured a plunging neckline.

One viewer joked: “For the love of @VictoriasSecret, who belongs to the pair of boobs sitting next to Ryan Gosling at the #Oscars ?!?”

Another said: “Ryan Gosling’s sister is winning the #Oscars tonight. #AcademyAwards #Oscars2017.”

Others questioned why his wife Eva Mendes did not accompany him to the ceremony.

One viewer tweeted: “What occasion will be deemed big enough for Ryan Gosling & Eva Mendes to appear together in public? Cuz if it ain’t the #Oscars.”

Ryan and Mendes - who have two daughters together - married in 2011. They are notoriously private and are rarely pictured together at events.

Sunday's ceremony proved disappointing for Ryan who lost out on the Best Actor gong to Manchester by the Sea’s Casey Affleck, and Best Picture for La La Land to Moonlight.

In an epic blunder, La La Land was announced as the winning film and saw the cast and crew pile on stage to make acceptance speeches, before it was revealed that a mistake had been made and Barry Jenkins' film was the real winner.

Gosling entertained viewers with his reaction which saw him sniggering awkwardly on stage.

Pricewaterhouse Coopers - the accountancy firm that oversees the counting of the Oscars ballots - has 'sincerely apologised' for the blunder which they put down to "human error".

PwC said in a statement: "We sincerely apologise to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture.

"The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred. We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.

"There are two sets of briefcases at the side of the stage at the ceremony, which each contain the evening's results, for security purposes."
