Azealia Banks says she might turn her back on rap, which she claims is “tacky” and “kitsch”.

The 23-year-old US star, who is best known for her rapping, said she wanted to sing more to make use of her background in musical theatre.

And she would not rule out making an album like Adele’s 21, saying: “Why not? Adele’s got number one records.”

Banks, who is from Harlem and studied at LaGuardia performing arts school in New York, said: “Rap is so tacky when you think about it. It’s a very masculine thing, you know? To be a female rapper is very kitsch.”

She told i-D magazine: “Having a musical theatre background, I’ve got a lot more class than just being a female rapper. I feel like I would be really selling myself short and really exploiting myself in a sense. It’s not what I want to do all the way.”

Banks released a new single yesterday called Heavy Metal And Reflective, after announcing her departure from record company Universal this month.

Banks, who has had Twitter spats with stars including Rita Ora and Lily Allen, said she admired Rihanna for her “authenticity”.

She said: “I love her because she’s young, she’s rich, she’s beautiful. She’s not frantic about anything. She’s not trying to pretend.”
